A good option?

Hello,

I was advised by someone here (to which I am grateful) to consider Jagiellonian for medical school entry. I have researched on the school and it does seem a viable option.

A bit about me: I am a Nigerian, graduated from a UK university with a first class in Biomedical Sciences, gained admission to a UK university for medicine but could not afford to go. I recently gained admission into the USA to study for an MPH in Community Health. I have not yet accepted the offer.

Please, I would appreciate if a few questions are answered for me.

1) Considering my creds, what are my prospects for admission to Jagiellonian for the 4-year English program? (I am preparing for the MCAT and hope to do it in May prior to the June application deadline for the program)
2) What are my prospects for residency placement in the US given my profile (non-citizen and an international graduate)?
3) What are my prospects for residency placement in the UK (again given my profile and given that the UK is not very foreigner-friendly where work is concerned at the moment)
4) Concerning admission, what are the minimum MCAT requirements?
5) In your personal opinion, is it wiser to go for the MPH and then apply for admission into medical schools in the US after two years?

Thanks and God bless.

Hi everyone,

I'm from Canada and I'm applying for the 4-year program in English at Jag for the upcoming 2014/215 school year. I was wondering if Jag offers clinical placements in Canada in the final year. I was also wondering if anyone would like to share any of their experiences or have any tips for future students (especially Canadians and students that recently graduated or that are currently in the program). Thanks in advance!

I'm a 1-4 starting in September and will be moving to Krakow with my fiance by the first of August. Our apartment is right next to the Galeria Kazimierz and we would like to meet as many of you as possible once we get there (unless you are currently living in Vienna...in which case we could possibly meet you today ). So who are all of you? 'You' meaning anyone who has studied, is studying, will be studying, or is considering studying at JUMC. I can't wait to meet you all -

Jag US Federal Loans and GI Bill

Hello,

I'd like to know if any American students currently at Jag in the 4-year medical program in English are currently receiving US federal student loans. From what I can tell from my FAFSA, the JU Collegium Medicum is approved for student loans (federal school code G12223) and the most recent spreadsheet from the Student Loan website (spreadsheet dated 1 April 2014) states that JUCM is approved. However, I've seen so much back and forth on this forum about which schools are approved, which are not, some participate, some don't, etc., that I'd like to hear it straight from a current American student at the school who is using, or at least attempted to use, US federal student loans (not Sallie Mae loans but actual US Federal Government student loans of any variety).

Also, are any of the American students at Jag currently using the GI Bill. I still have about one year left of Post 9-11 and I'd like to know if anybody is currently using their GI Bill benefits at Jag, and if not, why not. The GI Bill comparison tool says there's at least one GI Bill user there, but it doesn't specify if that person is in the JUCM or JU at large.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance!

Hey, I'm starting this thread to see who else is applying to the 4-year program for this fall. I've already sent my application in and this past week I was asked to confirm that I would like to be interviewed in Toronto, so it looks like all my documents and pre-reqs checked out. Just for reference, my stats are: 30 MCAT (11 VR/ 10 **/ 9 PS) and 3.08 cGPA, it would be higher if I did not have a 0.58 GPA my first year :/ .

JAG University Information

Hello everyone,

I was born in the United States and attend University there, but both my parents immigrated to the US a couple years before I was born. I hold both a US and Polish passport. I have a lot of family members that live in Krakow and in the surrounding areas. I can read, write, and speak Polish, but maybe at a high school level.

I love the city of Krakow, I spent many summers there when I was a youngster with my family. One of my professors recently told me something about attending Jagiellonian University for free of charge since technically he said I was a Polish citizen? I couldn't really find any information online.

I would like to practice in the US, so I know it is harder as a FMG, but I would like to keep my options open.

Jagiellonian Financial Options

Hello all,

I am from the US and planning on applying to Jag next year (to start in Fall 2016) for the 4-yr program. I have a few questions regarding finances and was wondering if anyone had any info on the matter. It would be much appreciated!

1. I have heard that if you have undergraduate loans that need to be paid off right after you graduate, that they "freeze" as soon as you enroll full-time in school again (even if interest still accumulates). Does anyone know if Jagiellonian, being a foreign school, still counts as being enrolled full-time in medical school in the US in terms of Stafford and Perkins loans?
2. It seems as though Jag is unable to offer loans as of currently to students from US, unlike Poznan's medical school. I have heard that they are working to fix this issue. Does anyone have an idea of approximately when loans will be available again?
3. In the case that those loans won't be available anytime soon, has anyone had any luck receiving private loans to help pay for school? I would feel a lot more secure attending if I knew there would be these types of backup options, just in case.

Thanks guys!!!

Hi,

I was wondering how the residency match was for Jag University (4 year English program) this year. I tried looking up the match list online to have an idea of how good the residency placement is, but it is not ubdated since 2012. I am a pre-med prospecting attending J.U and it would helpful to have a sense of the chances I have of landing a residency in the U.S after medical school.

Thanks for any helpful information in advance

Entrance Exam Chicago 2016

Jagiellonian vs Poznan?

$

Hello everyone. I have been accepted to the 4 year MD programs in Jagiellonian and Poznan and trying to get some advice in helping me make a decision. Which one is the better school? I am intending on returning to the U.S. for residency. I like that Jagiellonian already has established partner schools in the U.S. (UCLA, USF e.t.c.) for electives which Poznan does not. However, I am most interested in the school with a proven track record in USMLE scores and residency matching. Also Poznan has NMBE exams for all their courses, which I think Jagiellonian does not. Help!!

2016 Jagiellonian 6-Year Entrance Exam (Chicago)

Hello!

I would like to share my experience as a 2016 applicant to Jagiellonian University Medical College and pose a question to other applicants from this year.

I am a college graduate with a degree in psychology and applied to the 6-Year MD Program for entry in Fall 2016. I submitted my application early and received the study guide and 18 practice test from the school in February. Prior to applying, I had spoken with the school and asked them whether the Entrance Exam was comparable to the MCAT or any other American standardized test - they said no and assured me that I should rely on the study guide and 18 practice tests (9 on chemistry and 9 on biology) they would provide. I spent the next 4 months studying. I found the study guide to be poorly written and very confusing. The school had also recommended an antiquated high school chemistry homework-helper and a standard biology text. But, the study guide did not state what chapters of these texts they wanted you to read. So, I had to cross-reference the guide and find the appropriate chapter in the biology book. The chemistry book was not very helpful. I spent the majority of my time doing the practice tests. The practice tests demonstrated questions with certain themes and they were all written using a linguistic-style. I set about studying the psychology of the practice test, made sure I was able to identify the different types of questions and made sure I knew how to approach each of their unique challenges. I completed the GRE last year, so I felt prepared to break apart these practice tests and strategize.

I was under the impression that the practice test were a representation of what the real exam would be like. I assumed they represented it's difficulty, question styles and topics. I had read on forums that the practice tests were accurate and that past applicants had used them to study with success. I remember someone stating that even some of the same questions were used on the prior exam. So, when I arrived in Chicago on test day I was totally confident. I had done the 18 practice tests numerous times, had basically read the biology test and felt solid on chemistry.

When I sat down to take the exam, I was shocked to find that exam was very different from the practice tests. The test was far more difficult, only about 25% of the exam was on topics I recognized from the study guide, the questions on topics I did recognize were written using different vocabulary so I couldn't really work out even what they were asking, also they asked many questions about topics that weren't referenced in the study guide or biology book. For example, there were random questions about smoking - which was not mentioned anywhere on the practice test nor study guide. I was completely baffled and shocked. It felt like I'd studied for the SAT and got handed the MCAT. The parameters of biology and chemistry knowledge that the study guide and practice test demanded were not comparable to what the actual exam required, and I was nowhere near capable. I left the exam room knowing I would not be admitted.

So, I'm obviously not at the skill level the school is looking for. But, I really wish they had provided accurate study guide and practice tests. If the practice tests and study guide had demonstrated the test's true content and difficulty level - I would never have attempted to take the exam this Spring and I would have chosen to wait and do a year of revision. I must admit, I am very disappointed by the school's choice to not update their study materials - it cost me a great deal of time and money. I also started looking at MCAT questions, and I believe that the difficulty level of many of the questions on the test were MCAT level material. So, if you're reading this and wondering what you should study - I suggest not relying in any way on the materials provided by the school and take an MCAT prep course or study an MCAT prep book. This test simply does not test you on standard, American high-school level chemistry and biology, I truly believe it is more akin to college pre-med level knowledge.

So, that was my experience and here is my question for fellow 2016 applicants: WERE YOU SURPRISED BY THE TEST'S CONTENT & DIFFICULTY? DO YOU ALSO FEEL THAT THE STUDY GUIDE & PRACTICE TESTS WERE NOT AN ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF THE TEST ITSELF? I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES!

Thank you!
